The Farringtons and the Mileses return to their remote country home from an evening out to discover the house ransacked and the valuables missing. They cannot call the police because the telephone wires have been cut and Barbara cannot remember whether she set the alarm.  A DCI soon arrives on the scene, only to be unmasked as the burglar. He is tied up ready to be handed over to the police, but the violated householders had not bargained on dealing with such a slippery character.
